The Foundational Calligraphy Program is an online course built for adults living in Canada who want a reliable, readable hand. The work is practical: how to hold the pen and nib, how to set a comfortable slant, and how to avoid the common “wobble” that comes from rushing. Lessons stay short so practice remains the centre of the week.

You’ll practise with a simple guideline system and a methodical stroke vocabulary. That includes entry strokes, compound curves, and spacing that keeps a word legible at arm’s length. We also cover ink control, paper choice, and how to finish a short piece without scuffs or fuzzy edges. The program is taught online and operated from Amsterdam, Netherlands by Limpid & Co B.V.; learners join from Canadian provinces and territories.

Module 1 — Tools, posture, and clean strokes

Set up a workable desk, choose paper that doesn’t feather, and practise foundational strokes until they’re predictable. You’ll learn to spot issues like inconsistent pressure, uneven counters, and ink pooling at turns.

Week 1–2

Module 2 — Foundational minuscule and spacing

Build a readable lowercase set from a small family of strokes. The module leans on measurement: x-height consistency, rhythm between stems, and spacing that keeps words open rather than crowded.

Week 3–4

Module 3 — Simple capitals and a finished short piece

Add capitals that match your foundational hand, then plan and execute a short piece: layout, margins, and a tidy finish. This is where drying time, handling, and paper choice matter most.

Week 5–6

Learning note

Expect an unglamorous stage early on: repeated drills that look almost identical. That’s normal. The goal is consistency, then speed—not the other way around.

The course doesn’t require a large kit. A stable surface, a comfortable light source, and paper that behaves well with ink go a long way. If you already have tools, you can use them; the course notes include a small compatibility checklist so you’re not fighting your materials.

Expect practical guidance on nib angle, ink loading, and cleaning. These are the small habits that prevent frustration: keeping the reservoir clear, blotting at the right moment, and storing paper flat so guidelines stay true.
